David Vlajčić, the candidate from the Domovinski pokret party to become Croatia’s new Minister of Agriculture, has received unanimous support from the ruling coalition partners. Vlajčić, who currently serves as the State Secretary in the Ministry of Construction, is set to succeed Josip Dabro, who will return to his parliamentary position.
The decision came following a meeting of the parliamentary majority, but no press conference was held afterwards. Ivan Kukavica from Domovinski pokret confirmed the unanimous support and stated that "more or less, we expect everything to progress smoothly." The proposal will be reviewed by the parliamentary Committee on Agriculture on Thursday, with a vote scheduled in the Sabor on Friday.
The leader of Domovinski pokret, Ivan Penava, emphasised the urgency of filling the ministerial post, stating, "We need quick solutions, we do not have time to wait, especially when the candidate’s quality is not in question." Penava also affirmed that Vlajčić is set to become the Deputy Prime Minister, maintaining the responsibilities held by his predecessor.
Further discussions during the meeting touched on managerial roles within Croatian Forests, a state-owned company currently led by Nediljko Dujić. There were rumours that Josip Dabro might demand management changes as a condition for continuing his support of the ruling majority. However, Penava stated, "Domovinski pokret does not impose any conditions," emphasising collaboration with government partners to achieve optimal personnel solutions.

Commenting on the discussions, Dario Hrebak, leader of the Croatian Social Liberal Party (HSLS), remarked that while he is supportive of Vlajčić’s candidacy, he disapproves of political trading concerning public company appointments. "I think state-owned companies should not be negotiated in this manner," he noted.
Armin Hodžić, Deputy Chairman of the Club of Representatives of National Minorities, expressed confidence in Vlajčić, citing positive previous collaborations. "He was approachable and effective as a state secretary, and I see no reason why he wouldn’t be a good agriculture minister," Hodžić commented.
Meanwhile, internal dynamics within the ruling coalition, particularly between HDZ and Domovinski pokret, appeared stable. However, unverifiable reports suggested potential challenges if Josip Dabro’s personal demands regarding Croatian Forests management were not met, though this was officially denied.
This change in the Ministry of Agriculture comes amid a broader governmental strategy to ensure optimal management across key sectors, aiming for efficient functionality of Croatia’s public systems.
