Croatia is facing severe winter weather conditions as heavy snow and strong winds cause significant transport disruptions, particularly in the regions of Gorski kotar and Lika. According to reports, a thick layer of snow began blanketing the areas well before noon, creating hazardous driving conditions across many roads. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service had previously predicted this weather pattern, prompting several warnings.
In response, the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK) has implemented a ban on vehicles lacking the legally required winter equipment, as well as on goods vehicles with trailers. Various reports confirm that the snowfall extends from Male Kapela through to the Sveti Rok Tunnel on the A1 motorway, leading to a speed restriction of 60 km/h due to reduced visibility and a need to manage traffic following a road accident in the region.
The coastal areas are also experiencing extreme weather, with a fierce bura wind affecting travel. Winds have reached speeds of up to 150 km/h, forcing the closure of the Krk Bridge due to safety concerns. Other routes, such as the A6 Rijeka-Zagreb motorway between Delnice and Kikovica, have been restricted to personal vehicles only.
In addition, the extraordinary weather has caused the suspension of some ferry, catamaran, and boat services. HAK advises travelers to check road conditions through their website or application before starting their journeys, recommending caution and preparation given the unpredictable nature of the current situation.
While the heavy snow impacts parts of Lika differently, with some localities like Gospić experiencing significant snowfall without the accompanying high winds, authorities urge only essential travel. The freezing temperatures and snowfall are expected to persist over the next couple of days, prolonging these challenging travel conditions.
