Osijek, a city in northeastern Croatia, has proudly unveiled its new river promenade, the longest of its kind in this part of Europe. The new promenade, which stretches an impressive 10.5 kilometres along the right bank of the River Drava, now seamlessly connects all parts of the city. This significant urban development was achieved through the completion of the final and most challenging section near Donji Grad, a project that required an investment of 13 million euros.

The grand inauguration was attended by numerous residents taking their first walks down the newly completed path. In a ceremonious opening speech, Ivan Radić, the mayor of Osijek, officially declared the promenade open, celebrating this as a monumental day for Osijek. "This day is a fulfilment of a long-held dream for many generations of Osječani," Radić stated, emphasizing the symbolic and practical importance of linking Donji and Gornji grad, as well as Tvrđa.

The ceremony was further highlighted by the presence of Ivan Anušić, Croatia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, who underscored the broader benefits such infrastructure brings to the community. The promenade not only enhances the city's connectivity but also plays a pivotal role in Osijek’s landscape.

Beyond improving walking and cycling infrastructure, the project also ensures flood defence enhancements with the stabilised riverbanks and the establishment of the north collector facilitating better wastewater management. Green elements are sprinkled throughout—157 newly planted trees, walking paths, and benches—transforming the walkway into a lush corridor.

The celebration included various community activities, including a leisurely walk, underlined by a striking white and blue fireworks display. As Osječani greeted the new promenade with excitement, the mayor hinted at future expansions. Planned projects include extending the promenade from Neptun through Retfala to Višnjevac, adding another four kilometres and valued at around 20 million euros.

This event not only marks a considerable achievement in Osijek’s infrastructural development but also becomes a day likely to be etched in the city's history. Citizens and visitors now have more reason to engage with the scenic beauty of the Drava riverbanks, enriching both the lifestyle and ecological footprint of Osijek.
